How a UAE car loan works
A car loan, also called auto finance, is a loan that a bank or finance company gives you to buy a vehicle. You pay part of the price yourself as a down payment. The bank pays the rest to the dealer or seller. You then repay the bank in equal monthly instalments over an agreed term.
Unlike a personal loan, a car loan is secured. The car is registered in your name, but the bank is recorded as the financier. In legal terms the car is mortgaged to the bank until the last instalment is paid. If you stop paying, the bank can take steps to recover the car.
This car loan calculator UAE drivers can use gives you more than the EMI. It adds the down payment, the processing fee, the insurance for every year of the loan and the registration cost, so you can see what the car really costs you from day one to the last payment.
Who can get car finance in the UAE?
Banks and licensed finance companies offer car loans to UAE nationals and to expat residents with a valid visa and Emirates ID. Lenders normally ask for:
- A salary certificate or payslips and recent bank statements.
- A valid UAE driving licence.
- A quotation or proforma invoice from the dealer, or a valuation for a used car.
- An acceptable credit report from the Al Etihad Credit Bureau (AECB).
- Proof of insurance before the money is released.
Each bank sets its own minimum salary and length of service. Some banks give better rates if you transfer your salary to them. Self-employed buyers can usually apply with trade licence papers and business statements.
Central Bank auto loan rules
Car loans in the UAE are covered by Central Bank of the UAE Regulation No. 29/2011 on bank loans and services to individual customers. Article 3 deals with car loans. The fee caps are in Appendix 2, last amended by Notice No. 3986/2019. The UAE government portal u.ae repeats the main limits.
Maximum loan: 80% of the car's value
Article 3 says a car loan must not be more than 80% of the value of the financed vehicle. In simple terms, you must pay at least 20% yourself. On a AED 100,000 car, the biggest loan a bank can give is AED 80,000. The rule talks about the value of the vehicle, so it applies to used cars too. Banks may ask for more than 20% on older cars.
Maximum tenure: 60 months
The repayment period cannot be longer than 60 months, which is five years. That is why the calculator stops at 60. A personal loan, by contrast, is capped at 48 months. If you are comparing using a personal loan to buy a car, see our UAE Personal Loan Calculator.
Debt burden ratio: 50% of gross salary
Article 7 says your total monthly payments for all bank facilities must not pass 50% of your gross salary. Your car loan counts, together with any personal loan, home loan, overdraft and credit card. If you add your salary in the calculator, it shows your debt burden ratio.
How the rate must be shown
Article 6 says interest should be worked out on a reducing balance on a yearly basis. Car loans in the UAE are still very often advertised with a flat rate. When a bank shows a flat rate, it must also show the equivalent effective rate. You should also get a Key Facts Statement before you sign that sets out the rate, fees and total cost.
Fee caps for car loans
The Central Bank fee table sets these maximum charges for car loans, before VAT:
- Early settlement: 1% of the outstanding balance.
- Advance payment of an instalment: 1% of the instalment.
- Late payment charge: up to AED 500.
- No objection certificate to the traffic department: AED 0 (free).
- Liability letter to other banks: AED 60.
- Cancellation fee: AED 100.
The table does not set a separate cap for the processing fee. Check your offer and type the fee into the calculator.
How to calculate car loan EMI in the UAE
Step 1: Work out the loan amount
Minimum down payment = Car price × 20%
Step 2a: If the rate is flat
EMI = (Loan + Total interest) ÷ Months
Step 2b: If the rate is reducing
EMI = Loan × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)^−Months)
Total interest = EMI × Months − Loan
Step 3: Total cost of the car
+ Insurance per year × Years + Registration
The calculator also converts the rate you entered to the other basis. For a flat rate, it finds the reducing rate that gives the same EMI and uses it to show how much interest you pay each year. For insurance, it multiplies your yearly figure by the number of years in the loan, rounded up. Real premiums usually fall a little each year as the car loses value, so this is a careful upper estimate.
Worked examples
Each example below uses the calculator. The insurance and registration figures are only sample inputs, not quotes.
Example 1: A new car on a flat rate
Priya buys a new SUV for AED 120,000. She pays the minimum 20% down, which is AED 24,000. The bank offers 2.5% flat over 60 months with no processing fee. She enters AED 3,600 a year for insurance and AED 500 for registration.
- Loan amount: AED 96,000
- Total interest: 96,000 × 2.5% × 5 = AED 12,000.00
- Monthly payment: (96,000 + 12,000) ÷ 60 = AED 1,800.00
- Equivalent reducing rate: about 4.73%
- Insurance for 5 years: AED 18,000.00
- Total cost of the car: 24,000 + 108,000 + 18,000 + 500 = AED 150,500.00
The sticker price was AED 120,000, but the full cost over five years is about AED 30,500 more once interest and insurance are added.
Example 2: A reducing rate over four years
Ahmed buys a family car for AED 80,000. He puts down AED 16,000 and borrows AED 64,000 at 6.5% reducing over 48 months.
- Monthly payment: AED 1,517.76
- Total interest: AED 8,852.34
- Total of instalments: AED 72,852.34
- Equivalent flat rate: about 3.46%
Example 3: A used car
Grace buys a three-year-old sedan for AED 50,000. Her bank wants 20% down (AED 10,000) and offers 3.5% flat over 36 months on the AED 40,000 balance.
- Total interest: 40,000 × 3.5% × 3 = AED 4,200.00
- Monthly payment: 44,200 ÷ 36 = AED 1,227.78
- Equivalent reducing rate: about 6.60%
A 3.5% flat rate sounds small, but on a reducing basis it is above 6.5%. That is higher than Ahmed's loan in Example 2.
Example 4: Too little down payment
Kamal wants a AED 90,000 car and has only AED 10,000 saved. 20% of 90,000 is AED 18,000, so the calculator shows an error. He would need to find another AED 8,000, choose a cheaper car, or check if the dealer offers a genuine discount.
Example 5: Settling early
Back to Priya. After 36 payments she wants to pay off the loan. Using the 4.73% reducing equivalent, the yearly table shows a balance of about AED 41,140.28. The maximum early settlement fee is 1%, or about AED 411.40, plus VAT. Banks work out the payoff figure on flat rate loans in their own way, so ask for a written settlement letter.

New vs used car loans
New cars bought from authorised dealers usually get the best rates. Dealers often work with partner banks and may offer promotions such as free insurance for the first year or free service packages. These perks have value, but compare the total cost, not only the monthly figure.
Used cars can be financed too, from dealers and sometimes from private sellers. Expect these differences:
- A higher rate than for a new car.
- A valuation or inspection report from an approved centre. The bank lends against its own valuation, not the asking price.
- A limit on the age of the car. Banks often set a maximum age at the end of the loan, which can shorten your tenure. This is bank policy, so it varies.
- Possibly a larger down payment than 20% for older or high-mileage cars.
Islamic car finance
Islamic banks usually offer car finance through murabaha. The bank buys the car and sells it to you at a higher price that includes its profit. You pay this price in instalments. The profit is fixed at signing and cannot rise later. Some banks use ijarah, a lease that ends with ownership. The same Central Bank limits on down payment, tenure and debt burden apply. Enter the quoted profit rate in the calculator in the same way as an interest rate.
Insurance and RTA registration
Insurance
Every car in the UAE must be insured before it can be registered. For a financed car, banks require comprehensive cover, not just third-party. The bank is named as the loss payee, so if the car is written off, the insurer pays the bank first. You must renew the policy each year until the loan is paid off. Premiums depend on the car, your age, your driving history and the insurer, so get a real quote and enter it above.
Some banks allow you to add the first year of insurance into the loan. If you do, the loan amount goes up and you pay interest on the premium. In this calculator, insurance is treated as a cost you pay yourself each year.
Registration with the RTA or police
In Dubai, cars are registered with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). In the other emirates, the traffic police departments handle registration. Your registration card, or mulkiya, shows the bank as the financier. Fees include the registration itself, number plates and some small service charges. A brand new car from an authorised dealer does not need a test before its first registration. Fees change from time to time, so check the current list on the RTA website or your emirate's traffic portal. Our figure in the examples is a sample only.
Remember that VAT at 5% is already included in most UAE car prices, but some dealer add-ons are shown before VAT. Our UAE VAT Calculator can help you check a quote.
Early settlement and loan clearance
You can pay off a car loan early. Under the Central Bank fee caps, the bank can charge up to 1% of the outstanding balance. Unlike personal loans, the car loan line in the fee table does not show an AED 10,000 ceiling. VAT is usually added.
On a flat rate loan, ask the bank how it works out the payoff figure. A fair method gives you a rebate for the interest you have not yet used. Always get a written settlement letter with the exact amount and the date it is valid until.
After the final payment, the bank issues a clearance letter or no objection certificate. The fee cap for the NOC to the traffic department is zero. You then take it to the RTA or traffic department to remove the bank's mortgage from your registration.
Many people clear a car loan when they leave a job or the country. Estimate your exit money with our UAE Final Settlement Calculator before you plan the payoff.
Common mistakes with UAE car loans
- Comparing flat and reducing rates directly. A flat rate is roughly half its real cost. Convert first.
- Looking only at the monthly payment. A longer term lowers the EMI but raises the total interest.
- Forgetting insurance. Comprehensive cover is needed every year of the loan.
- Believing zero down offers at face value. The law caps the loan at 80%. Check where the other 20% comes from.
- Ignoring the debt burden ratio. A car loan can block a later personal loan or mortgage.
- Selling the car without settling. You cannot transfer ownership while the bank's mortgage is on the registration.
Practical tips for buying a car on finance
- Get a quote from your own bank as well as the dealer's partner bank.
- Put more than 20% down if you can. Each extra dirham saves interest for every remaining month.
- Pick the shortest term that fits your budget.
- Ask for the reducing rate and APR in writing.
- Check your AECB score a few weeks before you apply.
- Read the Key Facts Statement for the early settlement fee, late fee and insurance rules.
- Keep all instalment receipts and the final clearance letter.
Where to get official help
Raise any problem with your bank first through its complaints channel and keep the reference number. If the bank does not solve it, you can go to Sanadak, the UAE's independent ombudsman for banking and insurance complaints, set up by the Central Bank. For registration questions, contact the RTA in Dubai or the traffic department in your emirate. For your credit report, use the AECB app or website.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum down payment for a car loan in the UAE?
20% of the car's value. Article 3 of Central Bank Regulation No. 29/2011 says a car loan must not be more than 80% of the value of the vehicle, so you pay at least 20% yourself. Some banks ask for more on used cars.
What is the maximum tenure for a car loan in the UAE?
60 months, or five years. Banks often give shorter terms for older used cars, because they also limit how old the car can be when the loan ends.
Are UAE car loan rates flat or reducing?
Many car loan offers are quoted as flat rates. The Central Bank requires banks that advertise a flat rate to show the equivalent reducing rate too. A 2.5% flat rate over five years is about 4.73% on a reducing basis.
How is a car loan EMI calculated in the UAE?
For a flat rate, total interest is loan × rate × years and the EMI is (loan + interest) ÷ months. For a reducing rate, EMI = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r) to the power of −n), with r as the monthly rate. The calculator handles both.
Can I get a car loan with zero down payment in the UAE?
Not legally from a bank loan alone, because the loan cannot pass 80% of the car's value. Dealer offers that say zero down usually cover the 20% through a discount, a separate arrangement or a higher price. Read the details.
What is the early settlement fee on a UAE car loan?
The Central Bank fee caps allow up to 1% of the outstanding balance. Unlike personal loans, the car loan line in the fee table does not show an AED 10,000 ceiling. VAT may be added.
Do I need comprehensive insurance for a financed car?
In practice, yes. Banks require full comprehensive cover with the bank named as the beneficiary until the loan is paid off. Third-party cover alone is not enough for most lenders.
Whose name is the car registered in?
Your name. The bank is recorded on the registration as the financier, which means the car is mortgaged to it. When you pay off the loan, the bank issues a clearance letter so the mortgage can be removed with the traffic authority.
Does a car loan count toward my debt burden ratio?
Yes. Article 7 of Regulation No. 29/2011 caps all your monthly loan and card payments at 50% of your gross salary, and car loans are included.
Is a used car loan more expensive than a new car loan?
Usually. Banks tend to charge higher rates and give shorter terms for used cars. They also need a valuation, and they set a maximum age for the car at the end of the loan.
